Caste Discrimination on Campus: New Rules Explained.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) told the Supreme Court on February 27, 2025, about some new rules made to stop caste discrimination in higher education throughout India. These rules want universities and colleges to make places free from bad treatment based on caste. The UGC started these steps after getting many complaints about caste discrimination.

The UGC has put together new rules meant for addressing and stopping caste-based discrimination at universities and colleges as part of ongoing efforts to have safer educational spaces that include everyone. The UGC noted it got 1,503 complaints on this issue; of these, 1,426 were solved by Equal Opportunity Cells formed at various institutions.

The regulations ,made by ministry of Education, were presented Infront of the Supreme court on February 27, 2025, follows a lot of reported complaints sent to Equal Opportunity Cells which underscored how badly more actions were needed against caste bias in schools.

The recent complaints of caste discrimination concerns all universities and colleges across India where hundreds of issues among students were reported. The newly created regulations will affect every higher education institution under UGC’s authority.

These new regulations seek fairness for all learners no matter their background involving caste matters. They underline a commitment from authorities towards fixing old social gaps inside educational settings while giving equal chances for success irrespective of backgrounds.

The updated laws from the UGC came from examining the problems raised through past experiences with cases concerning caste discrimination. Drafts will be released soon so that people can share thoughts before finalizing them officially.
